Four'N Twenty turns 60!
01 Jan 2008
The Four’N Twenty story started in Bendigo in 1948 with the brands founder, well known caterer Mr LT McClure rapidly developed a reputation for baking the most delicious meat pies in the area. It was not long before a large percentage of his meat pie production was being sent to Melbourne.
Demand for Four’N Twenty pies expanded rapidly and the company first opened its first Melbourne bakery in a pavilion at the show grounds. This bakery was soon too small in the face of such popularity and a new bakery was built in Ascot Vale.
Demand for Four’N Twenty pies continued to increase with deliveries extending to all suburbs and many country areas. Large quantities were sent by rail and road to distant country towns and cities. McGlure eventually sold the business to his original pastry cook, Les Gillies. Since then ownership of the ever growing popular pie brand has changed hands with the decades – Peters ran it in the late 1960’s, the Adelaide Steamship Company in the 1970’s and Pacific Dunlop from the early 1980’s until three years ago when it finally fell in to overseas hands at Simplot.
The iconic Australian Four’N Twenty brand was rescued from foreign hands by local Australian manufacturer Patties Foods Ltd in 2003.
The Four'N Twenty brand is part of the Australian Culture and we look forward to enjoying its next 60 years!
